Institute Presentation
The University of Birmingham Centre for Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism (CEDAM) is a world-leading research centre of excellence that works closely with the University’s Centre for Rare Disease and Personalised Medicine. CEDAM is located in the Institute of Biomedical research with state-of-the-art lab facilities for molecular and cell biology and steroid mass spectrometry; immediately adjacent is the Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Facility that offers a dedicated cutting edge metabolic assessment suite. Patients with disordered sex development and congenital adrenal hyperplasia are reviewed at the Reproductive Endocrinology and CAH Specialist Clinics at the Birmingham Women’s Hospital (Prof Arlt) and the DSD and CAH clinics at the Birmingham Children’s Hospital (Dr Krone), which are both supported by a dedicated DSD and Reproductive Endocrinology Genetics Service (Dr Trevor R. Cole). Our specialist clinics serve as tertiary care service to the entire West Midlands population (approx. .5.5 M, i.e. 10% of the UK population). We see 200-250 patients /year with DSD in our dedicated DSD clinics.
